Note: If you take driving lessons with an instructor you do NOT need car insurance, as you will already be covered under your instructor's policy. However, if you plan to get some extra driving practice in with your parents or in a friend's car then you will need to take out learner driver insurance, which provides cover for provisional licence holders learning to drive.
Once you have your provisional driving licence and learner driver insurance then you're pretty much set to start learning to drive. Here's the rules for learning to drive along with some learner driver insurance rules to remember: -
If you drive without the right supervision, you can be fined up to £1,000 and you can receive up to six (6) penalty points on your provisional licence.

The driving theory test pass rate has fallen dramatically in recent years since the DVSA tightened up on questioning and revision guidelines. In 2007, nearly two-thirds of drivers passed the theory test but now that’s down to half.
The UK driving test consists of three (3) sections: -
1. a driving theory exam;
2. a hazard perception test; and
3. a road driving test.
The UK's Car DVSA theory test lasts 57 minutes and you need to get at least 43 out of 50 multiple choice questions correct to pass.
The theory test is made up of two parts; a multiple choice questionnaire and a hazard perception video test. You will need to pass both parts to get your certificate.
All the UK driving theory test questions are based on three (3) sub-divided subjects: -
The following list is the complete recommended reading guide to help you pass the UK driving theory test. Study these three (3) books to learn the rules and skills you’ll be tested on. You can order them online here on Amazon now and have them delivered to your home by post. Some of the books are also available in Kindle edition.
Part of the DVSA theory exam also includes the Hazard Perception test. It requires you to view fourteen (14) hazard video clips on the computer screen, each approximately one (1) minute each. The clips feature everyday road scenes and contain at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards. A developing hazard is something that may result in you having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction and what you need to do is identify these as early as possible to get as high a score as possible (max 5 points per clip).
To practice hazard perception use The official DVSA guide to hazard perception; it's available on DVD-ROM.
The Official DVSA Guide to Hazard Perception theory test book for car drivers has been compiled by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). It contains multiple choice questions from the whole theory test question bank, with answers and explanations, dealing with topics such as: alertness and attitude, vehicle safety and handling, safety margins, hazard awareness, vulnerable road users, motorway rules and rules of the road, road and traffic signs, documents, accidents, and vehicle loading.
